摘要:词汇意义的讲授是课堂英语教学中的一项重要内容。一方面,教师在课上全面地向学生讲解一个词汇的多种抽象的字面意义与具体的文本意义是必要的;另一方面,教师又面临着在有限的时间内对于一个多义词词义的艰难选择。词类转换知识的应用能让学生更为通透地掌握各种词汇意义间的内在联系,而一个词汇的伴随意义的讲授则有助于学生了解该词汇的文化内涵,从而使学生真正学会正确地使用这些词汇,以实现跨汉英文化的交流。

一、引言

优美的英语语言几乎是通行于全世界的工具语言,能说流利地道的英语是许多人的梦想。试想,当我们真正实现了能与以英语为母语的人们的成功会话和交流该是多么令人备感惬意的事情啊!而我们的广大英语教师正是肩负着这样的历史使命,并以此作为我们最终的教学目标。但是,要达到这一目标,让我们的学生能在拥有100万到200万英语词汇的汪洋词海中遨游,需要做大量的工作。因为我们的学生经过小学、中学阶段的英语学习,也只能掌握大约2000多个词汇,这比起能基本达到日常会话交际的5000词汇还相去甚远。鉴于此,英语教学中词汇教学是一项重要的内容,同时更是一项极其艰巨的任务。这里仅以英语词汇意义方面的教学谈一些粗浅的尝试和想法。

二、抽象的字面意义与具体的文本意义

顾名思义,所谓英语词汇意义教学就是向学生讲解英语词汇的意义。所谓词汇的“意义”实际上指的是一个词自身的,处于静态的,不受外界因素影响的抽象意义(abstract sense),即字面意义。例如,词典中给词下的定义就是典型的抽象意义。我们知道,一个词汇只有在具体的语境,如句子或篇章中才有意义,反之,它只是一种抽象的符号,不具备任何含义。例如,根据词典,英语单词“book”作为一个名词,虽然有如下7个基本的字面意义:①书,书籍,簿本,文字著作;②(大写)圣经;③卷,篇;④(邮票,车票等的)本,(火柴等的)包;⑤赛马赌注记录;⑥(复数)商业帐册,记录等;⑦(歌剧的)唱词脚本,但是脱离了语言使用的语境或话语场合,以上7个抽象意义便具有不确定性,因而也就不具有任何交际价值。而一旦进入具体的语境,“book”便有了交际价值,从而排除了其不确定性和歧义性特征。比如:课上老师对学生们说:“Please open your books and turn to page 45.”我们马上就能确定在这个场合之下,“book”只能表示“书”这一语境意义。同样,在另外一个场合,如几个演员在谈论各自在“book”中的角色分配时,其表达的语境意义也就成了“脚本”了。可见,理解了一个词的本身意义,即字面意义并不意味着就能理解其语境意义(contextual meaning)。而我们学习英语就是为了交际的需要,也就是学以致用,否则,学习也就失去了意义。我们在教学中使用的是由若干篇课文组成的课本教材,而不是字典,这就足以说明词汇的具体意义是我们的学生应该掌握的,也是我们的英语教师在课堂上应该予以重点讲解的。但是,过分地强调语境影响之下的具体意义(concrete sense),也就是课文或句型里的书本意义又常常使得我们的学生把一个单词只跟那个具体意义等同起来,结果学生见到该词就只联想到那层意义,这是对英语词汇含义片面的理解和掌握。在这种情况下,如果遇到特定因素,如语境等因素的变化,学生们对于学过的词汇往往就无法理解了。因此,全面地掌握一个词汇的多种意义又是有必要的,在课上向学生指出一个词汇的多种意义也是必要的。

三、一词多义的艰难选择

在有限的课堂时间之内不能完成几乎是无限的词汇内容的讲解,而且,即使讲解了,学生也会因为没有重点而困惑于茫茫词汇意义之中。这就要求我们的英语教师在熟悉教材的前提下,尽量筛选词汇的那些与课堂教学密切相关又较为实用而且适合学生接受能力程度的意义加以精炼的讲解。

我们还是拿上面提到的“book”作个例子。比如在课文中出现了这样一个句子:“This is an English book”。“book”在这里的语境意义是“书”,作为一个生词,这一层意义是非讲不可的。如果面对的是初学英语的小学生,则讲解到这一层也就够了;如果是中级学生,含义则可以扩展到意义①,④,因为在现实生活中,我们也常用到和提起这两层意义;若是高年级学生则可以进一步揭示到①,②,③,⑦,因为他们在这个时期已经听说或读过那样的“书籍”了;若是专业人士,则还可以着重讲解一下④,⑤,⑥,因为这些意义可能会经常出现在他们的生活和工作之中。可见,面对众多的词汇意义,我们只能根据学生的层次有所选择地加以讲解了。那种全不考虑学生的因素,凡词都要将其全部抽象意义罗列一番,再云山雾罩地大讲一番,是非常不可取的做法。

四、词类转换知识的应用

在教学实践中,我们会发现有些词汇的意义是由于它改变了自身的词性而衍生出来的。我们还拿“book”做例子:它可以被当成动词来使用,并且具有如下抽象意义:①记载(定货单等)于帐册中,②(指警察)登记对(某人)的控告;③订(座),订(票),接受订座或订票,④聘请某人为演说者,表演者等。其实,关于词类转换的用法,汉语,尤其是古汉语的文言文中屡见不鲜。最为常见的莫过于名词的役动用法,如:帮人笞子,绳之以法,等等;形容词的使动用法,如:故天将降大任于斯人也,必先苦其心志,劳其筋骨,饿其体肤,等等。

在英语中,词类转换的现象就更为普遍和频繁,词类转换也就成为英语语言生成新词汇的重要手段,因为这种方法在所有造词法中最为简单,人们不用去考虑新词汇的拼写问题,只要把一个旧有的词汇的含义延伸即可。据统计,自二战到上个世纪80年代,通过词类转换创造产生的新词汇占了同期所有新词汇的10.5%,此后,随着科技的大发展及信息大爆炸时代的到来,利用词类转换获得的新词汇就更多了。教学实践表明,利用词汇的词类转换功能扩大词汇量最为简洁,同时,掌握一些词类之间的转换还能加深学生对于一个单词意义的记忆。

在各类词性词汇中,很多都能相互转变,带动该词汇含义的转变。这种转变是非常复杂的,但是又可以说这里面有许多公式化的东西。一般来讲,形容词和副词各有7种转化功能,名词和动词各有6种,介词、连词和数词各有5种,代词有4种,象声词有3种,冠词有1种。其中,名词转化为动词是现代英语中极为普遍的现象,也是转换法中构词力最活跃的方法之一。自有英语语言以来就一直存在着并正在成为当代英语中一种迅速发展的趋势。其使用范围日趋广泛,经常出现在不同语体和不同语言环境中。

关于词类转换的方法,老师一下子都罗列给学生去记忆是很不明智的。但是在所接触的教材及练习中撞见实例,不趁机提示又是可惜的。

五、词汇的伴随意义

在众多的词汇意义中,有一类含义是应该提倡加以讲解的,那就是词汇的伴随意义。伴随意义是英语“connotation”的汉译术语,它源于中世纪拉丁语“connotionem”,意指一个词语除了其基本含义外所具有的附加涵义,英国语言学家利奇(Geoffery Leech)指出,伴随意义是一个表达单位具有的交际价值,它是通过该表达单位的所指传达的信息。生成语义学创始人雷柯夫(George Lakoff)在其1973年的论文“模糊限定词和语义标准”中,充分肯定了伴随意义作为词的语用意义对句子的影响,并指出词典释义应包括伴随意义的内容。随着英汉语综合研究的进一步展开,一批中国学者也逐渐意识到双语词典里应该设计一项“文化注释”或“国俗语义”的解释。因为伴随意义多与文化有关,趣味性较强,学生大多喜欢。在多数时候它们不仅活跃了课堂气氛,还增长了学生的文化知识,学生的学习兴趣很浓。正因为是兴趣所致,学习也就不再是负担,而是一种休闲甚至享受,因而学习效率极高,学生也乐于在课上课下频繁地使用这些意义。比如,初学英语的人,尤其是顽皮淘气的孩子,总会以为“dog”这个单词是用来骂人的,殊不知,在英语文化中,人们养狗不仅为了打猎,看家,而且常常为了作伴。有人无儿无女,便拿爱犬代替。不少的狗能得到相当多的“优待”甚至“特权”。语言上人们也习惯于把“狗”当“人”看。如:“Top dog”是“最重要的人物”,“Lucky dog”是“幸运儿”,“Every dog has his day”则是说“凡人皆有得意之日”。可见,狗并不只是仅能激起人们厌恶的心理的动物。

教师在讲解表示颜色的词汇时,可以捎带对比一下它们在汉英语两种语言中不同的伴随意义,使学生加深对它们的理解。如:在汉语中,红色象征着兴旺、喜庆、爱情和幸福等,而在英语中红色则更多代表愤怒、敌对、挑战和危险等;汉语中绿色代表春天、新生和希望,而英语中的“green”常被联想为缺乏经验、嫉妒等贬义;在中国文化中蓝色表示肃穆、严肃,而英语中的“blue”则常常被人们用来表示沮丧、消沉或淫猥、下流。因为表示色彩的词汇也具有表示精神和心绪等的伴随意义,我们就可以这样描述一下布朗先生:Mr. Brown is a very white man. He was looking rather green the other day. He has been feeling blue lately. When I saw him, he was in a brown study. I hope he’ll soon be in the pink again.(布朗先生是位忠实可靠的人。那天他脸色不好,近来感到闷闷不乐。我见到他时,他显得心事重重。我希望他早点振作起来。)

对于英语词汇伴随意义的讲解,实际上也为学生能进一步理解和接受诸如Love me, love my dog.爱屋及乌/as strong as a horse壮得像头牛/as poor asa church mouse穷得像叫花子/to laugh off one’s head笑掉大牙/等英汉语中关照性的表达打下了基础。

六、结语

当然,对于一个词汇含义的扩充的范围要视具体情况而定。对于一个词汇的功能要突出其实用性,在讲授方法上则应突出趣味性。那种良莠不分,大肆罗列词汇意义的做法也只能让学生如坠云里雾里而望英语却步;相反,教学中一个词汇意义的准确选择,必然会提高英语课堂的活跃气氛,极大地提高学生的学习效率并激发学生追求新知识的欲望,从而在整体上大幅度地提高教学效果。

值得指出的是,在英语词汇意义方面的教学中,我们的英语教师要首先起到“本民族文化的代理人”的作用,要让我们的学生做到“学而知’,而后“学以用”,最终“学求新”,因为我们学习西方的语言,了解西方的文化,其目的都是为了进一步弘扬中国文化,实现中华民族的伟大复兴。因此,我们的词汇教学的目的不只是尽可能全面地向我们的学生介绍一个词汇的各种意义,还要让学生在本民族文化和外来文化互动的过程中逐步达到自身的内部认知和思维的变化,以便真正让学生学会如何在实现跨汉英文化的交流中正确地使用这些意义。
