Dormouse: A Lesser-Known Yet Fascinating Rodent When people think of rodents, they usually picture rats or mice scurrying around. However, there is a lesser-known but equally fascinating species of rodent called the dormouse, also known as the hazel dormouse or the common dormouse. One particularly popular type of dormouse is the African dormouse, also called the flower petal mouse or the African pygmy mouse, also known as the "花粟鼠" in Chinese. Dormice are small, furry creatures that are usually found in Europe, Africa, and Asia. They range in size from 2.5 to 7 inches long, with a bushy tail that is almost as long as their body. They have big, round ears, big eyes, and a cute button nose. Their fur can be different colors, from brown to gray to white, depending on the species. Unlike many other rodents, dormice are mainly nocturnal, and they are active at night. During the day, they sleep in trees, in bushes, or in nests that they build out of leaves and twigs. They are also excellent climbers and can move quickly through trees and bushes. This makes them hard to spot in the wild unless you know where to look. Dormice are omnivores, which means they eat both plants and animals. They feed on fruits, nuts, seeds, flowers, insects, and small animals such as snails and caterpillars. They have sharp teeth that help them break open tough shells and crunch through hard insect exoskeletons. One of the most interesting things about dormice is their hibernation habits. During the winter, dormice go into a deep sleep, and their body temperature drops to near-freezing levels. They can stay like this for up to six months, without eating or drinking. Dormice can also fall into a torpor, which is like a mini-hibernation that lasts for a day or two when they need to conserve energy. In some cultures, dormice are considered a delicacy. In ancient Rome, for example, they were a popular food among the wealthy. Today, however, they are protected in many countries, which means it is illegal to hunt or kill them. Dormice are also kept as pets in some parts of the world, although they are not as common as other rodents like hamsters or guinea pigs. They require a special diet and living conditions, so they are not recommended for first-time pet owners. In conclusion, dormice might not be as well-known as other rodents, but they are equally fascinating creatures. Their nocturnal habits, hibernation, diet, and cute appearance all make them an interesting species to study and admire. If you ever get the chance to spot a dormouse in the wild or visit a dormouse exhibit in a zoo, take it – it's an experience you won't forget!花粟鼠
